As scores of San Francisco police officers corralled protesters into a narrow area in front of city hall Tuesday afternoon, a neo-hippie San Franciscan — five-day-old shadow, knit cap, backpack — chatted up one of the on-edge cops. “This has got to be better than the Iraq (war) protests, huh?” he said brightly.
“None of them bother me,” the burly officer responded brusquely.
“Yeah, but these people are peaceful,” said Neo-Hippie. “The Iraq protesters were all anti-American and violent.”
I had to pinch myself. I was standing next to the conversation, smack dab in the center of America’s Leftist Capital, and voices of reason were ringing out all around me.
These lovely women, the McCain Girls, have put together charming and entertaining videos expressing their support and admiration for John McCain. But because they are not drop dead gorgeous with hot scantily clad bodies and song bird voices they are being maligned and ridiculed.
Granted everyone enjoys looking at beauty. However, what a sad reflection on our society when those who are deemed ordinary are scorned when they dare to step outside and be seen. It seems this odious attitude is more prevalent toward ordinary women than ordinary men. Ironically, it is ordinary men who are often the guilty ones behind the computer screen jeering at any woman who dares to show her average appearance.
I laud the McCain Girls for their moxie! Beauty and talent are nice but courage, determination, confidence, loyalty and resourcefulness are to be as just as highly esteemed or even more so. Strength of character is a beautiful thing...
