A mixed day for freedom

It seems that the people of Venezuela have declined Hugo Chavez's offer to be President for Life. Good for them. No doubt his friends in Hollywood are bitter and teary eyed tonight.

Voters in Russia however seem to have handed a huge victory to Vladimir Putin's minions. On balance, they could have done worse I suppose since the primary opposition is the discredited Communist Party. The sad truth is that there is no democratic opposition worthy of the name in Russia.

USC meeting Illinois in Rose Bowl

I couldn't be happier...really. Illinois my undergraduate institution is headed to it's first Rose Bowl in 23 years. Today is good day.

Pelini coming back to Nebraska

Bo's return is great development for Husker Nation. He was a class act as Defensive Coordinator and his win in the Alamo Bowl (while serving as interim Head Coach) after the 2003 season should have earned him the job in the first place. I think though that his finest hour came before the bowl game. After Frank Solich was abruptly fired (despite going 9-3) many of the players were openly talking about refusing to play the bowl game. Pelini quelled this mutiny and somehow got his players to rise to the occasion and stomped Michigan State 17-3.
